The effectiveness of laser hair removal depends heavily on your skin type and hair color. At Miss. Elegance™, we work according to the Fitzpatrick classification: a medically substantiated classification that helps to accurately tailor the treatment to your skin.
- Light skin types (Fitzpatrick I–III)
With light skin combined with dark hair, the laser light is optimally absorbed by the pigment in the hair. This ensures that the hair root is effectively deactivated. The results are often visible quickly: the hairs begin to fall out within one to two weeks. Because this combination is ideal for laser treatment, fewer sessions are usually required for a permanently smooth result.
- Tinted skin types (Fitzpatrick III–IV)
The results are also very good for light to tanned skin with dark hair. However, the treatment requires a little more caution, as the skin is more sensitive to pigment changes. The first hair loss usually occurs within two to three weeks after the treatment. For the best results, one or two extra sessions are sometimes necessary.
- Dark skin types (Fitzpatrick V–VI)
For dark skin and black hair, the specialized Nd:YAG laser is used, which was specifically developed for skin types with a high melanin content. This laser penetrates deeper into the skin, thereby reducing the risk of burns or pigment disorders. Nevertheless, there always remains a small risk of slight discoloration (hypopigmentation), even with the correct settings. For this reason, every treatment is performed with extra care. Hair loss usually begins after two to three weeks, and it may take somewhat longer to achieve the desired final result. In some cases, an alternative hair removal method is recommended, based on the principle that safety always comes first.

How does it work for different skin types?
Every skin reacts differently to laser hair removal.
- Light skin types (light skin, light to dark hair): Laser absorption is best on light skin and dark hair. The result is visible quickly: the hairs usually start to fall out within 1 to 2 weeks. Often, fewer treatments are needed to achieve a permanently smooth result.
- Tanned skin types (light to tanned skin, dark hair): The results are also excellent for tanned skin. However, the skin requires slightly more caution to prevent pigment changes. Hair loss usually starts within 2 to 3 weeks. Sometimes 1 or 2 extra sessions are needed for the best results.
- Dark skin types (dark skin, black hair): For dark skin with black hair, the special Nd:YAG laser is used. This laser was developed to safely treat skin types with a high melanin content. The Nd:YAG laser penetrates deeper into the skin, thereby minimizing the risk of burns or pigment changes. However, it is important to be honest: even with the right equipment, there always remains a small risk of hypopigmentation (light spots) on dark skin. Therefore, every treatment is performed carefully and with extra attention. With dark skin, it may take slightly longer for the treated hairs to start falling out, often within 2 to 3 weeks after the session. It is also possible that more treatments are needed to achieve the desired end result. In some cases, I advise choosing a different hair removal method. Safety comes first.
In summary
- Dark, thick hair: Responds fastest to laser treatments. This hair absorbs the laser energy optimally, resulting in the best results.
- Light brown hair: Responds well, but may require more sessions than dark hair.
- Blond, red, or gray hair: Unfortunately, laser hair removal works less well or not at all on these types of hair, because these hair colors contain little pigment. Miss. Elegance™ will honestly discuss during a phone call whether laser hair removal is the right choice for your hair type, or whether waxing, for example, offers a better solution.
- The treated hairs begin to fall out within 1 to 3 weeks after each session.
- On average, 6 to 12 treatments are needed for a long-lasting smooth result, depending on your skin type, hair color, and the treatment area.
- Maintenance treatments (for example, once a year) are recommended to keep the result looking beautiful.
